I have removed several hand hewn beams from an old barn on my property, and want to use them in my kitchen. I see that there is evidence of previous bettle activity and I am unsure if there is any current activity. I want to treat these timbers (4" x 8" x 10') and then install. What can I use that will kill these bugs without calling an exterminator? Is there anything that I can use that doesn't leave a nasty odor? Thanks for any help or experiences.

I've had good luck stickering buggy wood, wrapping in sort of a poly tent and setting off a flea fogger. Learned this from an old wood turner friend of mine who loved wormy woods. JonC
*Chris, jon must have the same friend as me. Living in the heart of tobacco country here in maryland we work with a lot of barn wood and use the same tech.Just for your info-clean with soap and water and coat with linseed oil for a great look on those beams

Thanks Jon. Could you tell me how long I need to keep the wood in the poly tent? Is there also a residual odor problem? Thanks again. Chris
*Thanks Bill. Can you give me an idea of the dosage required, length of treatment, and does the smell last for a long time? Thanks again for your help.

Chris, follow the dosage on the cans... are you removing the wood? Or do you wish to fog the house? Either way, the fog settles out in a given time period. A borate (borax) solution will prevent re-infestation, but leaves micro-chrystals on the wood... use in basement/attic, etc....
Not much is available on the web on this subject,
and most extermination companies are poor authorities on Powder Post Beetles. Be aware, for
technical correctness: Powder Post Beetles infest hardwood; it's the "False" Powder Post Beetle that infests softwood. As if that REALLY matters when the dust is piling up!

*Chris,I just use one canister and leave it covered for a day. Havent noticed any problem with residual odor. The stuff I use is intended for indoor residential use so I wouldnt think that it would be a problem. Residue is only a problem if you let it spray directly on the wood but washes off.Hope this helps. JonC

Thanks George for your help. I removed the beams from my barn and will fog them in a plastic tent. I then plan to install them in my kitchen ceiling.
Can I purchase the borax at a local ag supply? Thanks for the additional Web address.
*Thanks Jon. I plan on making a small plastic tent and place the beams in the tent. Does temperature when you spray present any problems? Thanks, Chris
