   If they are prefinished boards with square edges (not slightly beveled) then the splitting and splintering is normal and will get worse as you walk on the floor.  Any vertical misalignment of the boards, no matter how slight,. will leave a vunerabvle edge.

   If they are prefinished boards with square edges (not slightly beveled) then ... I was told that prefinished flooring all had at least a micro-bevel and that prefinished flooring never is offered with a true square-edge. Was what I was told incorrect? I was told this by a flooring retailer.

   Of course you were told wrong.  :)   I have a friend who had some inexpensive prefinished installed, and I saw it about six months after.  There were quite a few chipped edges, and when I looked at it closely I saw the edges were square.  Looked like crap.

   Bruce prefinished has a "Macro" beveled edge. I installed Bruce prefinished using a pneumatic stapler and also had a couple of boards splinter along the top edge well above the tongue. I don't know why but I was not happy when I had to tear out a course to get at the damaged board.

   Sounds a bit odd. I've installed more flooring than I care to remember, and never had that problem. Not familiar with the Paslode, is it a floor-nailing setup or are you using a trigger-actuated stapler?
   If it's set up as a standard floor nailer, you might check for burrs along the portion of the base plate where it transitions from the top of the flooring to the area above the tongue. If it's a sheathing stapler, it's more likely a misalignment of the shoe/driver placement with the top of the tongue.

   What are you using to "tap" the boards together?

   You should be holding a scrap piece up against the flooring, and tapping it.

   Never, tap, the flooring itself.
