Bid a fence job ,got it, went to pick up materials and had a mild heart attack cedar pickets have gone up a dollar to 3.50 a board that is a whole dollar higher than three months ago and drives the cost of materials up 2$ a running foot.
I am gonna take a beating on this one!

I have not seen any significant price increases in solids at all. I just rechecked a job I bid last August using acres of VG fir and it went up about 1%. Cedar has been similarly stable. You should check around for other suppliers and see if you can get the old price. Nothing has happened to make cedar spike in price that I know of.
I think Andy Clifford just found a good deal at HD. You might find out more from him.

Home Depot is where I buy my cedar as they use to be the cheapest and they were a full 6" wide.I am going to call around today and see if there is a better price but Lowes was the same price and there cedar is not near the quality.

Yup. I just bought some cedar fence boards this morning here in Minneapolis. 1x6 x 6', $3.59/each.
$3.59 here in Omaha, too.

Yeah that dollar hike is going to cst me close to a 1000$ on this one job alone.
Called a couple of my builder buddies and there regular fence companies haven't gone up yet,at 14$ a running foot they can't be making .50$ a ft. thats just too dang tight something is going to have to give.

can ya plead material price hike and get the customer to help absorb some or all of it...

Yeah I could do that but I bid a little high to begin with on the extras and created some shortcuts that they liked that will save me some money.
And I found cedar boards at 84 lumber for 3$ a peice and I am going to try and get home depot to match that price.
Also already told the HO the nasty suprise and that I would deal with it ,to see how they will handle it.They went out of town for ten days and I asked if it was alright if I brought my kids over to swim while they were gone and they said no problem so the little perks make up for the hit.
This was my mistake not checking on the prices before submitting the bid so another lesson learned.
In calling my builder buddies I reestablished some old ties with potential high profit remodels.I made these guys some real good money on remodels they wouldn't normally have bothered with and they were glad to hear I was available to do some more. So maybe this was a karma thing.
