I have a small addition to build. the plans call for a triple pressure treated 2×12 girder over big foot and sono tube
got me thinking, why PT? why not untreated doug fir? nothing is touching the ground. I would rather not deal with the shrinkage of PT
what is the preference?
Replies
how far off grade is the girder? will it be within 18" of the ground? if so thats the height cut off for treated in MI. does it have a foundation? or piers, girders and sonotubes?
just throwin an idea out,

If you use PT then all metal that touches it (nails, joist hangers, anchors, etc.) has to be rated for such use. Anything less will corrode quickly if it gets moist.
I prefer the untreated, but that really might not be a choice for you.
BI might have something to say!
