I have 17 replacement casements in my basement to replace 17 vintage 1984 Marvin windows that have leaky seals. I’m staining them with a color fast dye to match the original frames. The first three went okay but the last two have places on the frame where something is blocking the stain. Given there appears to be some kind of silicon sealant smeared on some of the glass, I think I know what happened – shoddy and sloppy workmanship when they were manufactured.
I’ve tried light sanding and gentle scrapping but so far, nothing is helping. Any suggestions?
BTW, Marvin has been less than helpful. My next house will have anything but Marvin windows. They basically don’t want to provide any service after the sale and told me “there’s an up-charge for manufacturing sashes for windows this old.
Thanks for any suggestions you might have.
