Question for the New England guys.
I was wondering why you guys strap the ceilings with 1x3s since it’s not a standard practice here. What is the thought behind it and what are the advantages over sheetrocking right to the joists? Is the strapping just nailed to the joists and then the drywall is screwed to the strapping? Do you guys strap the walls too? Thanks.

A few things I like about strapping: Sometimes it's easier or quicker to strap than to add blocking everywhere. A bigger target to hit with your dw screws. If you are using figberglass batts, you can drop your batts into place onto the strapping before you hang the ceiling.
Guys I learned from swore that strapping helped with nail pops and cracks at corners, especially when hanging on trusses.
They strap ceilings here because trusses are usually 24 o/c and the drywall will sag with that much span. They strap 16 o/c
i like strapping as well.
we strap ceilings and walls. we blow cellulose in the walls so strapping is neccesary. without the strapping the insulation would stick out beyond the stud wall line. i think it's much easier for sheetrock as well. none of those blank spins that can be maddening at the end of the day. plus with strapping on the walls you can ensure that your baseboard has solid nailing . no searching for your reference stud.
just my $ .02
there was a long discussion...
on breaktime classic about this subject....here's some of it...
if you.ve never explored the many benefits you get from furring ceilings,, here's a few :
here's one... installing ceiling fixtures... if you are furring with 3/4 ( 1x3 )...you can install a pc of 3/4 to hang any fixture
here's another....if you are insulating a ceiling.... you can mesh the ceiling, then furr it and blow your insulation in....you don't have to wait until the gyp board is hung
here's another... installing soffits and blocking / backing for ceiling trim
here's another.... you don't need blocking for non-bearing walls... partitions can go anywhere
here's another.... floors are stiffer with furring than without
the cost is minimal...the benefits are numerous...
we also furr our exterior walls with 2x2 ....called a Mooney Wall, but we staple , stretch and glue insul-mesh to the face...then blow dens-pak cells into the 5" cavity
Thanks guys. Not sure if I'll ever do it but good to know about why it's done. Do you guys glue the strapping too or just nail into the joists/studs and screw the rock to the strapping? I can definitely see it being a plus when doing any electrical work after it's finished. Snaking must be a breeze! Thanx.

OOOPPS. Sorry for the 3 posts. Computer was running slow and I hit it 3 times (the button not the computer :) )
Next time smack the side of the monitor -- that usually gets the electrons flowing again. Or, if it's a laptop, pick it up and shake it.
