Questionable floor joists structural integrity
First time home owner here, I bought my house this time last year and have been totaling remodeling since then. Today while cleaning out the basement I took a minute and really looked at something that I had seen not not felt the greatest about since I bought the house, which is how they attached the floor joists to main beams in the house. The house is 1800’s so maybe this was common then, I don’t know. They scabbed a 2×4 to the main beams then notched the 2×8 floor joists and set them down onto the 2×4’s. I don’t know if it’s happened over time, or it’s been like it since they built the house but the top of the 2×4’s scabbed to the main beam have pulled away enough I can get my fingers down into my first knuckle between the 2×4 and main beam. Pretty unsettling. And it’s not just as easy as putting a new beam in and putting jacks on it because there is gas lines, furnace vents, etc where a new support beam would preferably go. And because of the 2×4 and notched joists a normal joist hanger is totally useless. HELP. Without spending a fortune and turning this into a giant project how can I reinforce these floor joists??
