I am in the process of building a 1300 s/f chalet style cabin/vacation home in the mountains of Eastern Arizona (elevation 8300 feet). I have finished the rough-in plumbing & electrical and am now ready to have the place insulated. For $1400 bucks my insulation contractor will install R-30 in the vaulted ceilings and R-19 in the walls & floors. For an extra $400, he’ll upgrade the walls & floors to R-21. It’s really not that much money, but is it worth it to upgrade?? Initially I plan on using a wood stove to heat the place with the possibility of adding a propane floor furnace in the future. The place is sided with Tyvek Building wrap and Hardieplank siding. $400 bucks is $400 bucks!!!
