As I get rady to start a radiant heat project using the staple up system, I was wondering about insulation. I have heard various ideas about how much and whether to leave a gap or not.

The best tool for straight, splinter-free cuts is made even better without a cord.

2" air gap between insulation
2" air gap between insulation & subfloor. Transfer plates are a real bonus!
Hi,
Since its a staple up, you will have an upward R value of 2 or so depending on what kind of floor is above it. If the area below in unheated, then you want a much higher downward value so that most of the heat goes up. I would think R20ish below.
Its a good idea to have an air gap between the tubes and the top of the insulation, and a very good idea to have a reflective top surface to the insulation -- something like aluminum foil faced insulation or aluminum foil on the top of batt insulation. The reflective barrier is very effective for downward heat transfer. There has to be an air gap between the top of the insulation and the floor for the refelctive layer to be effective.
