Hi guys, just looking for input of what I can do with this detached garage I have in my backyard. From what I can tell the loft area isnt properly framed, and its kind of sketchy to walk on. I was just going to take it out, and have an open/vaulted ceiling. The roof was framed with collar ties, but no rafter ties… should I add some in?
Garage span is 24′ wide, I was thinking adding 2×6 x16 rafter ties 1/3
of the way up
I dont have a want or need or a loft area up there, and Id rather have a higher ceiling and the center beam and posts out of the way in the garage area
Ill attach a couple pics from the attic/loft of the garage
TIA!

1/3 of the way up is what I’ve always heard. If you can coordinate it with a drywall seam tat is always nice so one sheet goes in with slits for drywall and the next sheet goes in full.
What about the 2x6 post going vertically from the floor of the loft to the ridge? Can I just get rid of that?
What’s on top of it? It’s not under a header at the ridge is it? It shouldn’t be. The roof is a triangle. The rafters push against each other at the ridge. The collar and rafter boards keep the bottom of the triangle from pushing the walls out. There shouldn’t be any vertical point load there.
No its not, if you look at the picture, it looks like the 2x6 is just pressed up against the bottom of the ridge beam. Not sure if its for additional support... but a ridge shouldn't need a vertical support halfway across its length right?
