I am a sucker for Rags to Riches type stories. Especially the ones about the immigrants that come to the US without speaking english and within just a few years are well on their way to the american dream. Have never found a collection of these stories anywhere. Would love to put my hands on something like this. Anyone have suggestions? Already done all the searches on the internet including Amazon.com etc.

rags -to-rags---with lots of laughs...
*Peter,I think you need to make a call or head into your nearest public library, and ask the staff there for help with this....some subjects you could look under are "immigrants, biography" or "immigrants, literature."I just spent some time on OhioLink which is the catalog for all of the academic libs in Ohio, and found 4100 references to "immigrants," many of which would lead you to stuff you might want to read. So I think looking at the library would get you some ideas, and even if you don't see exactly the kind of thing you are looking for, sometimes the bibliographies in the backs of the books will refer you to something better.I'll keep poking around and let you know if I find something more specific for you.
*Here something to check out:http://goldsea.com/RTR/
*In my ongoing efforts to perfect counterfeiting of currency I have found that I get a much better paper if I incorporate fibers from torn up imported rags into the paper making process. Does that qualify?Rich Beckman
*Have you tried http://www.horatioalger.com ?
*Try reading biographies of people like Andrew Carnegie etc.
*Check out Jonathan Raban: Hunting Mr.Heartbreak = terrific narrative from arrival "off the boat" to going into Macy's to get the Americanized look, etc. And then Badlands = getting sucked into purchasing "worthless" land near railroad tracks in Montana. Excellent writing.... true stuff.
*jane... loved "badlands"
