I called 2 scaffolding companies to give me a bid on erecting a system 20′ tall and 54′ long over uneven terrain.
One bid came in at 1200$ labor and 350$ for scaffold rental the other came in at 1800 labor.
My son and I managed to erect and reerect 6sets of scaffolding in about 8hrs total including borrowing and returning.
The 1800$ labor bid said he could erect the whole run in 3 hrs.,then return and dissasemble.
Do these bids sound high or am I just stunned by sticker shock?

I am always surprised by the cost of scaffolding. Most of the companies around here are union, there are high insurance rates due to the nature of the job.
I always price 2-3 companies and the subs vary as to who is the lowest. Maybe the hungriest one gives better pricing.
Did I say how I am always surprised by the cost.

Sounds like a fair price to me.

Working for nothing is not getting any cheaper.
Doesn't suprise me- you've got over 1,000 SF of scaffolding, and it sounds like it's 4 sections high. You and your son would spend 4 days putting it up and taking it down if it took you a day to do 6 sections- what's that amount of time worth?
They'll put it up in 3 hours because they have guys who do it all day every day, and they'll bring a crew of 8 guys to do it.

That was putting up and taking down the 6 sections all the way across and both sides so that I could do the whole job. It was three sections high with walk board laid between 2 towers to give me 20 ' of run at one time.

PS: Used adjustable feet and concrete blocks to level scaffolding.
How do you figure scaffolding in square feet anyway?

You said the area to scaffold was 20' high by 54' long- that's 1080 SF of wall to scaffold. The scaffold companies figure it by sections, depending on what system they use.
Bob
I gottcha, the scaffolding was set up to replace soffit so what I needed was walkboards at 20' across the 54' run.
They're bid was 1800$ for three towers with walkboards connecting.
So for siding jobs I should ask for wall square footage and height?
I figure 4 skilled guys could easily build this in under three hours and teardown in less so that works out to around 75$ a man hour which doesn't seem crazy except I will bet three of the 4 were paid about 10$ an hour.
