I’m making the footings for the pillars for me cabin.
(Yes, I know it’s backwards to make the floor and pillars, then have to move the pillars to make the footings, but at my house, you either do what you can afford at the time, or you don’t get anything done at all….)
Mixing the concrete… What, if any, difference will a bit of laundry detergent in the water make ? I am thinking of using water from a barrel that I put a bit of detergent into to kill the mosquito’s…
What difference would a minute amount of bleach make ?

Luka,
Damn if I know, but I'll help you think through it, huh?
Is it Laudry detergent (soap) or is it "a minute amount of bleach"?
In mixing concrete, it's always use CLEAN water - seems like much soap at all might inhibit binding.
On the other hand - a "minute" amount of bleach is kinda like the chlorination in our city water, and we use that straight out of the hose bibb all the time, right?
I suppose the point I'm trying to distinguish is whether it's soapy water, or just a few tablespoons of chlorine bleach. Waddya think?
Geo.
*That was my thinking. I always question my own thinking more than others'.There is chlorine in the municipal water anyway. The only bleach in the bottles was what was left after rinsing them out. I used bleach to clean them, to carry drinking water in. That didn't really have me worried, but I thought that I'd ask anyway. The only water I have left at the moment is some rain water that collected in a barrel. I had to put some liquid laundry detergent in it to kill the mosquito larvae. The water is brackish looking, and there's enough soap in there to suds a bit when it is poured from one container to another.I guess the last footing will have to wait until I can go get some more clean water...Thanks.b : )
*ACI ( american concrete institute) says to alway use drinkable water for mixing water. I know when ever I wash my hand after mixing concrete with dish washing soap it creates an amnonia odor. But to hurt the concrete i do not think it would effect it, you could alway try a test batch. or just collect another barrel of rain water
*I just ran and got some more water. Drinking water quality, of course. LOLNow is the hard part.... Waiting for the durn things to set up so that I can replace the pillars and get on with framing the walls...Thanks all...b : )Hmmmmmmm..... Maybe I shoulda added some jello....
*Cool! The detergent will create a few bubbles during the mixing, you'll have homemade air-entrained concrete!Atta-boy!The bleach? You'll have the whitest, brightest, homemade, air-entrained concrete this side of Ice Station Zebra.
*Luka - Based on what chloride ions do to concrete I would not want to see any significant quanitity of chlorine bleach in it.
*No problem. All that was left in the bottles was whatever was left after rinsing them out.b : )
