Red cedar shingles- grade advice

I’ve been buying 18″ R&R’s to repair the damaged siding on my house, but the price is killing me. Since I’m painting them to match the good sections, do I really need the best quality shingles or would a lesser grade suffice? The exposure is an alternating 6.5″ and 3″ coursing common on cheapy Craftsman/Box houses in NJ.
