Many years ago Fine Homebuilding recommended using Redi Footings, a really interesting idea using only schedule 40 pipe and some end caps. Most of the articles are from the 2009-2011 era. Here are is an example:
https://www.finehomebuilding.com/2009/04/16/how-to-set-deck-and-shed-footings-with-plastic-piers
This fine homebuilding article from 2008 recommends them as well:
https://www.finehomebuilding.com/2008/03/05/shortcuts-to-a-shed
As does this video, from 2013.
https://www.finehomebuilding.com/2013/10/25/build-tool-shed-series-foundation-system
Recent videos from Mike Guertin about deck building haven’t mentioned this as an option.
Is this still a recommended/viable option? If not, why?
I am genuinely curious. I need to set a shed foundation. The last one I did was 6×6 piers set on a solid concrete pad under the frost line. Basically using Deck code and prescriptive practice, since I anticipated the shed to have no more loading than Deck code allowed (probably less, from what I calculated).
Thanks for any thoughts, insight, and anything else you can say.
