I want to remove the acoustic “POP CORN” ceilings in my house.I don’t however want to create a mess.
Can some one suggest the best method to use while keeping the dust down.

1)remove all furniture
2)cover the floor with plastic, wall to wall
3)spray the ceiling with water and a little detergent, a pump-up garden sprayer works well
4)scrape the ceiling, something long handled with a dull knife edge
5)clean up the mess
If the ceiling has not been painted this works very well
If the ceiling has been painted, the objective is to get water into the pop-corn. Try spraying (for dust) then brush the ceiling with a stiff coarse push broom, spray again and scrape.
Good Luck

Some of the sprayed-on textured acoustical ceilings contained asbestos. If yours does, you may want to take extra precautions such as those outlined in the Utah DEQ webpage:
http://www.eq.state.ut.us/eqair/haps/asbestos/asbstrem.htm
*An add to Tim's Item 2: Tape floor plastic about a foot below the ceiling so the walls, casings, etc are also covered. It is amazing what the we popcorn will stick to so cover EVERYTHING.
