Our kitchen has 1/2″ plywood sub floor, then 3/4″ particle board, then 1/4″ plywood, then peel-and-stick nasty tile. The tile does not run under the cabinets/island, everything else does. The adjoining rooms have the same 1/2″ plywood sub floor, but then 1/2″ particle board, then 1/4″ slip-and-slide parquet squares. I want something nice: 3/4″ strip red oak throughout.
It’s easy to remove the tile and parquet. My 4-yr-old has been doing it for years with her bare hands. But the kitchen is still 1/2″ higher. I can add 1/2 to all the other rooms to make them match , BUT, that complicates the toilet connection in the bathroom and the hot water baseboard height throughout. I could add a threshold at the 3 kitchen doors (tacky). I’d rather remove the 1/4″ plywood and 3/4″ particle board in the kitchen and build back to the right height, but HOW??? I can’t cut close enough to the cabinets with my circular saw, esp. the toe kicks. I really don’t want to pull the cabinets all out (plumbing, gas line, power, expensive tile backsplash cemented to counter etc.) HELP! Any ideas?
