Job is repainting an “exposed” fiberglass entrance door. first tried right over Mcloskys oil based gel stain. didn’t take well due to the topcoat. stripped it w/a fiberglass stripper and, rinsed and redid. Sitting for 36 hours and plan on using
rag w/ thinner to grain it. followed by spray spar varnish. any tips?

I would only recommend Therma-Tru's finishing kit. Stain, application materials plus brush included, and a waterborne clear topcoat that outperforms anything else.
They've a good video, too, that shows you how to do it right. I think it is downloadable from their website.
