Im looking to put in new replacement windows and have a simple question for most of you on breaktime. If the windows were put in from the outside, would all the windows have exterior stops? Im trying to do research and they all say to take interior stops out and put replacement window against exterior stop. Thanks for all the replies in advance.

I am trying to think of a situation where you would not have exterior stops.
What kind of windows do you now have?

I've done a couple of jobs installing replacements in casement frames. They generally don't have exterior stops.
I'm not crazy about replacement windows, but sometimes ya gotta take jobs so you can pay the bills.
Yeah, I have one to figure out for a guy who has given me 500K of work on a cottage he has. I really don't want this one...It happens to be french casements that we need to replace, and the wall is thin - only a 3-1/2" jamb at most. Marvin thinks they can probably put a wood DH into an AL clad frame/jamb for me. The wood frame/jamb is full 4-9/16"

My windows are single paned, original to the house. They have aluminum tracks that fit into aa dado routed in the window. The reason I am asking this question is if windows are put in from outside, and secured from outside, why do you need exterior stops. I lokked and did not see them. Thanks for all the replies, this has helped me out alot with this info
part of the reason for the exterior stops is to keep any wind-driven rain from getting into your house, around the edges of the windows.
How about setting the windows from the outside, and then installing some exterior stops, preferably in some caulk to seal everything up tight.
If your windows don't have exterior stops, you can glue and nail stops on to give you someplace to set the window to. I usually add a 3/4" x 3/4" stop, but 1/2" x 3/4" is OK.
Most guys who install vinyl windows to replace wood sashes and remove the exterior stop. They bend the metal wrap over the removed areas of stop and back in another inch or so and bend the sill piece to under the bew window and set the window in between the metal. Better method with this is to sawzallout a slot in the side jamb above sill and have the sill piece slide under the jambs.
