Well guys, I have almost successfully reversed my exterior door 180 on the vertical axis moving the hinges to the other side and having the former exterior now on the inside. The door is hung. Works smoothly and doesn’t bind….but…..
The bottom corner of the door, opposite the hinges, warps inwards leaving the door about 1/4″ shy of close contact with the stop and the threshold weather strip at the bottom corner. The gap closes about 10″ up and 10″ over from the corner. This wasn’t a problem when the door was in its original position as the latch in the centre pulled the door tight against the stop. The gap between the door and the jamb is otherwise even all around and it seals well against the stop everywhere except that pesky corner.
My thought is to leave it exposed to the elements (currently direct sunlight) for a week to see if it straightens out by itself. If not then I’ll pack the lower extent of the stop with a tapered bit of wood and raise the threshold a bit at the corner. Can’t move the stop ’cause its integral to the jamb which you’ll remember from the original post is part of the surrounding window wall.. Any other suggestions? I haven’t re-installed the hardware yet.
The door is 33″ x 77″ solid oak rails & stiles, 1 3/4″ thick with two raised oak panels in the bottom and two sealed double-glazed window lights in the top.
Appreciate all your helpful comments so far.
