Robotic vacuum???

User avatar
JonBlakemore | Posted in Tools for Home Building on March 16, 2009 11:03am

This is probably a long shot, but has anyone ever considered a vacuum that cleans on it’s own for a job site?

View Image

My wife is going to buy a consumer version for our home and she asked if I had ever thought of getting one for our jobs. I can think of many reasons why it would not work well, but maybe I’m just a skeptic.

BTW- I will save you the time of adding the vacuum to your shopping cart- it’s $89.99.

It would be kind of cool if it sat up a little higher with some soft weels. This way it could go over the nails and scraps, but still get all of the dust.

The current technology can barely handle a house. The smarts needed for a construction site may come about 5-10 years from now but isn't available currently.

Is it a Roomba? Would he buy one again, given the opportunity. If it's not worth it, I may be able to convince my wife to save the $$.

Haven't talked to him about it recently. But he's a techie, single, and the Roomba works well for him. Harder to say how it would do in a regular house.

I keep threatening to get a Roomba, we have four cats and I am afraid I need one with the bailer option.  A customer had one, I do not think she had a six square ft of unobstructed area in the whole house. For those who have fought for it Freedom has a flavor the protected will never know.

They do tend to get "trapped", like under a chair, but the company keeps improving the software. They're rigged so that they can detect when an area is extra-dirty and they'll go over it several times.

Woot.com had some for $100.  I think our cats would love to chase it.  I would be emptying it all the time.  If they could just incorporate some hay bailer/trash compactor I would be in business (:-0For those who have fought for it Freedom has a flavor the protected will never know.

Save your money. It's a gimmick. I've never known anyone who had one who still uses it or that would buy another one.

I have a Roomba. Actually, my wife has one...I think it's a silly pos. The whole thing reminds me of the movie, WALL-E (I think that's the name) when the population was all riding around on hovercrafts because they were too fat and lazy to do anything for themselves. Sorry, I'm a little outspoken!Seriously though, The Roomba seemed to work "just o.k." on shiny, slick, flat floors, but when the batteries loose their recharging ability (about 1 year for hers), you get to buy another battery - $50 to $100 I think. Maybe they're cheaper now.On another note, I hope another Chinese robot isn't going to start replacing an American laborer. And we wonder what's wrong with our economy. Sheesh. (Yep - I'm grumpy!)By the way, her roomba is now taking up precious attic storage space ;)

" Have you used a robotic vacuum? "

Isn't that the point of a robotic vacuum?  They sort of "use" themselves.

I think that would be a great idea, but you would want it to be about a wobble light jr height:  You wouldn't want to be carrying 2 sheets of 3/4" ply down the hallway and step on your cleanup helper.
