This weekend I am finally going to roof the shed dormer addition I put on my house this summer. The new roof is abou 32 feet long and about 17 feet wide. It is a 2 1/2 pitch. A friend who is helping wants to do rolled roofing which he claims to have done successfully on a number of roofs when he was a contractor. Another contractor friend has recommended against it and instead has said to shingle it. What do others think? (Neither I nor my helper have done a rubber roof)

Cover the whole thing with Grace Ice&Water Shield then shingle.

What Rez said, and I can't say it enough.... Use ice and water shield. Seriously.
Yep, low pitched roof like that it's the best bang for the buck.

Rez hit it on the head.
Roll roof is a waste of time and money. Don't ask me how I know, and I won't tell...
The grace Ice and Water shield will cost you more than the roll roofing would, but it is the very best you can do for the buck. If you cover the entire roof with it...
2 and a half in 12 pitch is a pretty low pitch. I don't know if shingles are suitable, even over grace.

Most architectural shingles are rated for installation on 2/12 - 3/12 sloped roofs with ice and water shield under them. Check with the particular brand you want to use instruction sheet. Some of them want you to use a proprietary I&WS for warranty purposes.
If your friend has done roll roofing for very long, he's propably gotten to do the same roofs more than once. It doesn't last very long.
