ROMEX DISPENSERS – home made

ROMEX DISPENSERS – home made

I am looking at the Greenlee folding stud mount caddy cable dispenser for a mere $120.  I don’t think so.

I am looking at my home made plywood and 2×4 dispenses for $10.  Cheaper, but the design still has flaws.

Need some sort of swiveling dispenser eye.  Cable wants to fall off the the plywood round.  Used scrap wood and pipe for a reel stand.  The pipe rotates on the bottom of the eye bolt used to hang the reel.  Rotates nicely.  Cable control needed.

Looking for other home made dispenser that work – cable reels off but doesn’t fall off.

There was a thread about this 6 months ago. A lot of guys use an orange utility cone hanging from the ceiling or from an interior door header.

i make em for my sparky in 5 min... use'n a utility cone... i bend a 1/4" rod  in a  upside down U then bend each led out 90degrees  about 2-3 inches out... on each leg... drill 1/4" hole thru cone about 2-3" down from top  in one side out the other...  this is where the bent out legs of your U will go...

home depot  cheap snap swivel is what you'll hang it from...  i made him some brackets that are C shaped that hang on a 2x stud where the weight hold them in place... has a 14" arm with a hook on the end to hang your cone from...  we use them for MC cable  but ...

        good luck

      Bill -

Thanks for finding the thread messages on romex dispensers.  I notice a contribution from the ToolBear there. <g>  That was the old Xmas Tree pattern.  I have moved upmarket to cheap plywood knockoffs of the Greenlee.

Downloaded their catalog picture and blew it up.  They have a rotating eye or fairlead.  We need an eye that will keep the cable in the plane of the coil.  Once it leaves the eye, pull in any direction.

Knocked one up of furring today.  Worked fairly well.  Next - one of PVC for the smooth edges.

I used a 4x4 center post then put a BC40 post connector at the top.  It has a 1/2" hole in the center, in there I bent a 3/8" piece of steel to hang from - the bottom is just bent 90 degrees.  Not enough space between the 4x4 to angle itselfe out, but plenty to let it rotate freely.

I built a horizontal one: braced 2x4 posts at each end of a piece of ply, about three or four feet apart, and a piece of metal pipe through the middle of the posts. It held up to three different spools of wire.
