Good Day:
I am rebuilding a porch and will be adding on a roof deck and converting the existing window to a door. Here is the site currently under construction.
View Image My plan is to intall 6×6 posts under each corner where the coffer boxes (?) are.
The upper deck will be appoximately 6 x 9 feet. I am confident that the roof can hold a deck of this size, but because the door will be so much higher than the deck, I cannot do the usual construction of sleepers directly on the roofing material. Instead, I will install a ledger board on the house side of the deck, and two 4 x4s at each corner. My concern is how to rest the 4 by 4s directly on the roof. Does anyone have any thoughts on a kind of footer that will spread the weight out a little bit?
Likewise, I am reluctant to let the weight of the coffers rest directly on the 6x6s as they are really hallow boxes. Need some kind of wide “landing pad’ in between the top of the 6x6s and the coffer boxes.

The first issue would be the footer. The picture shows the existing roof not to far from the house and either a basement or crawl space under the house. There must have been some excavation in the area. Is the soil original or fill. Jay
hey Jay
All that debris is earlier work. My new porch contains and hides it. To piffin: Yes I am trying to avoid reframing the roof.

Are you sure this wil have that much step down? I ccounted clapbords and assumed a 4" lap. that says I can frame the roof with just enough slope to shed water, and build with no more than 2x6 sleepers for the deck. Any more wil make this look top heavy. I don't even like that thick of a decl up there on so smll of a space. Anyways, it looks like that would leave only one step down from inside floor to the deck, whicch is good.''
That porcch should not have simple 6x6 support posts. The right architectrual detail would be round columns.
BTW, are you trying t avoid re-framing the roof itself?

Hi Piffin
Sorry about the confusing threads. Anyway I can do sleepers if I build a step, and I could use much less and lighter lumber. My reluctance is in having a step eat up valuable space on such a small veranda. Also the 6x6s will be boxed in with 1x primed pine or Koma trim. My other rational in floating the deck over the roof was to rise above the awkward pitch, albeit slight a slope.
thanks Dan
