Roof Design without Ventilation

| Posted in General Discussion on April 6, 2000 03:24am

Help! Educated and/or experienced opinions wanted!

I’m in the middle of building my own home and am working with a progressive inspector who suggested solving a framing snafu by building an unvented gable dormer. His simple guideline was to seal the area completely and pack the rafter bays tight with insulation. After reading the latest issue of FH and coming across William Rose’s response to the problem posed in”Ridge Vent without a Soffit” I’ve gotten a bit jumpy…. My situation is different, but my eyebrows have been raised . I live in the Pacific Northwest and the climate is obviously moderate and DAMP. I plan on using a vapor barrier paint, but could easily add plastic under the drywall. Anybody with either commercial and/or residential building experience want to offer advice on unvented roof spaces? Thanks-Michael Rivers

Michael, is this a joke? Are you looking for a fight or something? This has been the topic of some unbelievable disruption here a couple of months ago. There have been hundreds of posts (many very angry) about the benifits of doing it both ways.

Check the archives but be aware that some scenes may upset you and it's not appropriate for children under 17.

*My Chevy's better than your Ford!DeWalt rules!....Republicans are more better!-What else can we fight about? Where's the Cuban kid today?Anyways, here's a good test situation. Completely seal the dormer, and vent the rest of the house. Report back with the results. This may be the field test we've been looking for. Jeff
