I am planning an addition and am unsure about how to attach the new roof. The addition will be perpendicular to the existing house. The pitch will be the same on both roofs, 4:12. Run on both will be 12′. Existing structure has 2×6 rafters, 16″ oc, as will the new part. Should I remove the old sheathing and rafters to cut in the new roof or just build on top of the old roof? Thanks, Rick

Leave that old stuff!! You've got a stable flat place to land, any tearout will only increase your work. On a 4/12 your seat cuts even on a 2x6 will be quite long, nearly 18".We usually make plywood rips which are glued and screwed down to the old sheathing to give you a solid plate to land on. Since you can't make the bevel (on those plywood rips) the edge would need to follow such a shallow valley, make sure you hold them back from the ideal intersection, how far depends on what kind of bevel your saw will do. Try to consider the existing ventilation as well, for porches in this situation we often put vent strips in the "gable" that you've created under the new roof above what used to be the exterior wall of the old house.
