Looking for some thoughts.
I’ll start by saying I’ve never done a house with exposed rafter tails until now. It is giving me some pause on how I do some of the ext. trim.
Project for wed. morning…..sub-facia and facia.
Let me back up and say that generally on a rafter tail, I bob off the bottom edge level to take a 2×6 sub facia, go over with my soffit, and then put up a 1×8 facia.
Well…. no soffit, no bobing off the tip of the tail… now I’ve got an 8″ plumb cut on my tail to cover and a 1×10 facia. The real sticker is that in one section of the house, all the tales are false (applied) and I’m not to keene of hanging all of that extra wieght out on the end of them with a ripped down YP 2×10 sub facia.
My impulse is to split down the sub-facia and use something like a beveled 2×4 up against the roof, leave ~3″ space and a 2×4 down at the bottom edge.
I take some meat out with the dead space and I can lighten it even more by using SPF (I’ll prime the heck out of it with cabot oil) in the smaller board.
The gutters will be hung from straps so no nailer for spikes to worry about. I’m not a big fan of going without sub-facia alltogether. Just would like to lighten it up in this case and still leave a good base for trim.
So… thoughts, reactions, ideas.
The split sub-facia seemed ok, I’d just never seen it done.
Thanks for your time.
Hope all had a Merry Christmas!
