O.K. I’m confused. First let me say you guys are a big help to me. I’m a wood worker not a carpenter. With that said. I have three vents that are going up this weekend and I need to know in what order do the roof jack and collar jack go on. It is a tile roof. First I will put the roof jack on the roof deck before I put down my paper. Seal it and then lay the paper down. and seal around the edges. And then put the collar on under the up hill side of the tile. And on top of the down hill side. And seal it. Is this the correct method. Thanks Hat

Well, Hat, my friend, I have to confess that I'm AT LEAST as confused as you are!
I really don't know what you're trying to do...what do 3 vents have to do with collar jacks? What is a collar jack? And putting the roof jack down before the paper...I'm really lost here.
Do you have a scanner? If so, could you draw a sketch and attach it (Make the lines nice and dark and clear and convert it to jpeg and under 250k please).

I don't have a scanner. Maybe I didn't explain myself well. I have 3 vents. 2 are a drain waste vent and one is a Hot water heater vent. This is new construction. I'm going off the book "Roofing the right way". In their, they bring up the DWV pipe up through the roof decking. And then lay down the roofing paper. After the paper is laid down then they put on a roof jack (they use a lead jack) with mastic. And all the tile is placed on and then they put on a vent collar. I have seen some new construction around here. And they put the roof jack on the roof decking. And then they lay the paper down. My other question is venting a hot water heater. I have an idea where I want to put. I need to know how do I vent. I mean, Do I plumb a line and cut a 4 inch hole in the celling. From their do I lay the paper down. Or do I put in the pipe first. And then paper. See, told you I was confused. Hat
Here's how I install a waste vent flashing in a tile roof: The vent pipe should be extending thru the sheathing. Install your felt (or better yet, ice and water shield) tightly to the pipe. If you set your felt or i&w on top of the pipe and tap it with your hammer, a mark will be made that you can follow with your knife to make a circular cut. Slide the paper over the pipe, nail it, and then caulk around the perimeter ot the pipe. Install the lead boot (jack) as you install the tile in the manner you described. Gently tap the lead flange to conform to the tile below where it overlaps.
I'm assuming the water heater is type b vent (double wall pipe with galvanized exterior and flashing). Install this flashing in the same manner (taping on top of the pipe may not be a good idea in this case), except you will probably need some goodcaulk under the bottom and at the sides of the galvanized flashing since it won't conform to the tile profile as easily as the lead.
