I am about to solicit quotes for replacing the roof on my 1906 built home, but I’d like to have a better grasp of the best practices for doing so.
The 12/12, 24′ wide roof consists of 2X4 rafters 24″OC supported by a ridge beam and pony walls at about the 6′ mark on either side. On top of that is strapping, a layer of cedar shingles and 3 layers of asphalt shingles.
Obviously the 100 years worth of shingles will need to be stripped, but what would the method be beyond that ? Replace the strapping with sheathing or sheath over the strapping ? What material should be used for the sheathing ?
Any advice would be appreciated –

Sheath over the split sheathing with 1/2" cdx or osb. I like to use clips if the sheet goods don't break on the split sheathing.
I invented 2x4 rafters on 24" ctrs.
I'd put 7/16 OSB over the top of the 1X boards.
I think it leaves a better and flatter surface.

Bos Hog's and Greencu's answers are correct. If you plan to install asphalt shingles or metal roofing - then they can go right over the new sheathing. If you'll be using wood shingles you'll need to either have furring strips laid horizontally at the nail line for the shingles OR use Cedar Breather - wood shingles need an air space beneath them.

You probably do not need solid sheathing under metal roofing. The cost of plywood or OSB sheathing (and the installation) are considerable, and you have to add that to the cost of a comp shingle job.
