Roof runoof damaging doors?

Hoohuli | Posted in General Discussion on August 22, 2005 04:12am

I have a house with several wooden exterior doors, all with a roof valley right by them. Problem is water runoff the roof is damaging all the doors. from the pics you can see that gutters will not work on the front entry because of the 3 different levels of eaves and nowhere to install 3 drains. The plastic raingutters just over flow at the point of the valleys, so no help there. My suggestion was to just put metal stormdoors with the sliding window to stop the splash. Any other ideas out there?

OK have the pictures as PDFs now. Jpegs are far easier to deal with, BTW.Gag me 'till I'm dead if I ever design something like that! but there is some help. The first two can have diverters added into the shingles near bottom to move water another foot or two away from the doorways. The last one can handle gutters. Even though nopt all the wate will make it into the gutter, that is better than nothing. I hate gutters, but what else you gona do with crap like that. Already too low to add awnings

I keep forgetting to put them in JPEG, all the property managers around here want them in PDF. Any idea who makes the diverters for the valleys? The last rain we had was about 2" in 10 minutes, lots of H20 coming down. More normal is 1/2" in 30 min. That multiple angle area over the front door and no where to put the down spout except emptying on the walkway is a real problem. I'll probably have to go with the storm doors, if I can find them over here, maybe at Cheepo Depot, you're right in that they have to be AL or they will rust in 6 months.

A roofing and sheet metal shop can make them up. I do it on site when it's called for.I had thought about mentioning rain chains, but then I knew it wouldn't do any good for your kind of rains.

I can understand the desire for PDFs for legal docs, They are harder to manipulate or modify

If it is the rain dirverters I'm thinking of, Lowes sells the material in 10' length around here.

Re the x3 pic, it doesn't look like there is any kick-out flashing right at the bottom of the roof/step flashing like there should be.  That would help with a few problems...

          1. Hoohuli | Aug 22, 2005 05:24am | #10

I'll check with our new Higher Lowes and see. You're right, there is nothing there to get the H20 off the wall, I didn't look yet to see if there is any caulking to stop the water intrusion on top of the trim. That door you see in #3 gets the worst, the Kona storms, not our normal trade wind showers.

Hawaii now has a Lowes?  Is City Mill still in business?  It's about the only place I went to when I was living over there.  Be a shame if it went TU because of the big boxes.  They had everything you'd need, and some pretty well informed people selling it.

            Aloha,
I'm on the Big Island and we just got Cheepo Depot and Higher Lowes in the past 2 years. They are in couple of locations on Oahu, but City Mill is still there. City Mill does have everything!!!! And most of it is not made in CHINA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No pictures but what you have described is abominbably poor house design, AL storm doors sounds like the only option from here. That or trade the house in on a well designed one.

Piffen, good to hear from you again. This was a contractor spec house, a friend of mine. He does quality work, normally, but I questioned the roof design before it was sheathed and he said "gutter will take care of it!" Now the new owner wants me to do something besides add some small roofs under the eaves, which I don't think is probable. Pics have been added!!
