I was just looking over the article “A More Resilient Roof” in the most recent magazine and I got a kick out of some of the safety practices used on the site. While most of the workers had hard hats on, where there was little chance of getting hit in the head, most of them had harnesses on, but not connected to lifelines! Hey, I’m a free spirit and all, but when it comes to your employees, their protection should be your utmost concern. Falls are #1 in injury/death in the construction field. I’m very surprised that the magazine didn’t catch this.

FHB always prints a disclaimer on a page close to the ToC.
Long-time subscribers know this and recognize that safety is always a serious concern but that some methods depicted are focused on the method and not so much on the safety aspects. Wise readers will always consider safety.
Holy Crap! Nothing like trying to cover your ass!
Real world man! As a solo carpenter unless I had hired helpers I did not put on safety gear. My perscription glassed were safety glass but I never wore steel toed boots in my entire career (actually Sperry deck shoes were my preferred foot wear). Did my helpers wear steel toed; absolutely. You do what is comfortable and at the same time assess the risk every day. I am retired and have all my fingers and toes.
Right. I've been a contractor for many years and safety was my own concern, I chose whether to wear safety glasses or put on a harness (with a lifeline), but when it comes to people working for you, you need to step up and protect them. I expect a writer, and the publisher, to follow safety guidelines, you don't know who's reading the article. You'd think the roofer that wrote the article would be on top of that anyway, he/she is the one writing the worker's compensation check.
Welcome to the USA - thank the prevalence of attorneys specializing in lawsuits.
We MUST protect stupid people (sarcasm).
But we do need to protect them, for their sake and ours.
