Just started to realize a concern with adding ventilation to an old house:
When the previous owner re-roofed the house he added a ridge vent.
The sewer vent stacks (3 of them) are located on both sides of the roof and depending on wind direction can sometimes provide ‘the smell’.
Took a while to figure out where it was coming from (real faint odor, kinda mysterious until last week when a very strong wind was steady from some certain direction – boom, ‘yuck!’).
Anyone got any great ideas? I am thinking about removing some of the ridge vent (the closest stack is about 2 or 3 feet away, the other two are 5 or 8 feet away). If that does not work I was thinking of making the stacks taller with some PVC pipe somehow.
Now that I have identified it (what is a really faint, occasional smell), I really can’t stand it all of a sudden!
