Hi CLS,
No doubt you will develop several sources for your newfound interest in roofing materials. I would humbly submit on behalf of Breaktime posters that we should be your most reliable source (once you sift through our BS).
Initially I'll presume that you are roofing/reroofing your primary residence with a pitched roof. Perhaps you can fill us in with details as you learn more about roofs.
Assuming that most roofing materials will work and that they are affordable, then your initial choice will probably be determined by aesthetics.
What is your current roof?

*Also check to see if your lib carries back issues of FHB, it has had several articles comparing roofing. (Check the index here on the site.)

Call NRCA tech services at 1-800-323-9545.
they had a recent survey about shingles that are complient with ASTM standards. many are not unfortunatley. they recomend to there members to only use shingles that comply with ASTM 3462 as a safegaurd against premature cracking.
Elk for instance does not have any shingles that were listed as compliant. All there money goes to advertising rather than quality manurfacturing aparantly.
Good luck

*There is a book called Modren Carpentry which i think you would find helpful for what u are looking at,it is in fairly simple terms as well.good luck ted

Can someone tell me where I can find information regarding different types of roofing materials, their good points and bad points, etc? Something written in laymans terms, please. A web search wasn't helpful - just got a lot of manufacturers rhetoric. I want to be able to have some idea of what I'm doing when I choose a new roof this summer...thanx.
