I recently had my garage roof done by a fairly reputable roofing contractor. My garage roof is flat with parapet walls. The roofer suggested that I use dibiten on the roof and on the parapet walls. At the intersection of the parapet walls (where the dibiten overlaps), the roofer applied a white mastic. The roof color I chose was slate. When I asked the roofer to make the mastic match the roof color, he refused. My questions are: (1) Should the contractor have used cap seal or should he have heated the asphaltic material and applied matching stone dust?; (2) Is there a standard industry practice that residential garage roofs should be mildly attractive?; and (3) What can I do now? Any help will be appreciated.

Clifford, around here, the standard industry practice is to refuse to do garage roofs because it is hard to make any money off of such a small job.I take all the garage roofs I can get but a charge a hefty price because I know no one else will do the job.You say you found a reputable contractor, but you must understand that appearance will be a secondary issue to him.I am not saying that looks don't count, but his concerns on a flat roof will be 1. how much money can he make,2. will the roof leak. Only then will he consider appearance.Get out your contract and see if he did what he said he would do in the contract. As long as the roof doen't leak I don't think there is much you are going to be able to do.You can't see the roof from the ground and probably the only place it is visible is from a back bedroom window or bathroom window(or roof top),so if it doesn't leak your problem sounds pretty minor.By the way, what is dibeten?Do you mean Bitumen? Good Luck,Stephen
