Happy birthday, America
I am soliciting bids to roof our new house, about 50 squares.
Can anyone give me help in drafting a contract which will protect us both. Around here (western Colorado) things like this are usually done on a handshake, but for something of this size I’m a little nervous, both for monetary reasons, and I don’t personally know any of the bidders, other than a recommendation from a building supplier whom I trust.
Any thoughts on how to construct a contract (I have sufficient legal knowledge to draft it, just not exactly what to protect) that will protect us both and not piss him off?
Thanks
Stef

If you don't know what to protect, the degree of your legal knowledge is probably insufficient, as well.
In my opinion (having practiced law for awhile) the best contract is on that (i) anticiapates what can go wrong and (ii) reflects a negotiated, agreed solution to all of those problems.
If a contract is well thought out, there are never any fights because they've all been anticipated and resolved when folks are still friendly.
I believe the approach to take with a contractor is to let the conteractor know that you want to be on the best of terms at the end no matter what happens, "so lets decide how to handle potential problems now."

where ya at here in Western CO? Close to Montrose? If so I can also help with recommendations...
Good luck to you.
Wethead,
Thanks for responding.
I'm in New Castle, west of Glenwood Springs.
Any help is appreciated
Stef
Sorry, but I am not familiar with the contractors in that area. I am in the Delta - Montrose area.
Am going through your area on Wednesday on my way to Denver. Am doing a job in Alaska for the next 3 weeks. I am a plumbing and heating contractor specializing in quality radiant floor systems.
