Reading some of the discussions on humidifiers made me think that I need to see the actual moisture content of a room before I go and get a furnace humidifier. I am not sure if these are called moisture meters or hygrometers. Once I saw on Ask This Old House about a product from Nortec that came with a meter that measures with a horse hair? I would like to ask if anyone knows of a good quality and mobile room moisture meter? There also seems to be a lot of digital meters in catalogues but I would like your thoughts based on experience. Thank you in advance.

Nope, don't know of a good quality one. Most of those you buy at hardware stores, etc, are carp -- not accurate within 10 points.
You can buy or make a sling psychrometer to get a very accurate reading of relative humidity. Very inexpensive and accurate:
