Hello there,
I’m on a DIY bathroom renovation adventure here and I’m at the point to prepare drywalls and concrete floor for tiling.
The problem is that the wall wasn’t fully painted and there is quite a gap that I need to level. This gap seems to be really to the drywall (if it’s not the drywall itself).
My question is:
Should I sand the whole wall to level it to the gap that I think is the drywall or should fill the gap with something and sand them both to match afterwards?
I’ve attached some pictures of the walls that I’ll be preparing / tiling.
Any help is welcome 🙂
Thanks!

Hold a straight-edge (carpenter's level or metal yardstick) up against the wall across the area. If the "filled" area is high (sticks out) then sanding (within reason) is appropriate. If it's flat or low then adding a filler to the low areas is more appropriate.
Sorry, not sure if I got it right. So you would fill the lower area with durabond for instance and then would sand them to match. Is that it?
Or is it the other way around? The white area is higher than then inside area. So I should sand the area outside to match it with the inside?
Thank you!
Flat in a long run is what you want. Long straight edge up and across to find the root of the problem.
It looks like previously someone filled around a cab or counter to even that up. So, is the wall goofy?
You want to fill in the low spot. Durabond is fine but if this is going to be a wet area you want to cover it with Red Guard.
As the others have said use a long straight edge to find any other high spots- those should be sanded down
The issue is not the walls. There is no shower pan. As much as I like Redgard I wouldn't want it as a primary shower pan. I think you need to take off the drywall and do the job right.
Uh, generally you put the shower pan on the floor.
And you turn it up the walls several inches without penetrations. The pan should go behind the wall substrate. If there were a pan the nails in the picture at the bottom of the drywall have ruined it.
I don't see anyplace to put a pan in those 2 photos. The toilet goes where the old wallpaper is and the recess is where a vanity was located. No shower location showing that I see.
Dumb assumption on my part? I should look/read more carefully.
