Cousin Bubba shot me an email asking about roofing guns. After I get back from my trip, he and I are going to do a tear off and re-roof on an old schoolhouse.
Bubba was thinking about buying a used nail gun to use on the shingles. (Probably on ebay) I’ve never actually used a roofing gun – Have always hand nailed. So I don’t know much about them.
I asked at the local lumberyard, and they have a Senco “Roof Pro 455” for about $300. They stock parts and have a guy who can service them. So I was kinda wondering if buying new might be a beter option. Never know what you’re gonna get when you buy used.
I tried searching the archives, but didn’t find much on roofing guns brands and what was/wasn’t good. So I was hoping to get some input from y’all.
I went to a fancy french restaurant called “Deja Vu.” The headwaiter said, “Don’t I know you?”

Dang, I'm getting the cold shoulder today. I figured this one would generate a lot of opinions.
Or maybe this is all just part of a vast left-wing conspiracy to ignore me.

I'll do the rest.
"Dang, I'm getting the cold shoulder today. I figured this one would generate a lot of opinions.Or maybe this is all just part of a vast left-wing conspiracy to ignore me." Okay, ya got me! ; )Boss, I can't comment on the newer Senco, but I had an older model for years, until someone else took a liking to it, & never returned it. It was a good, dependable gun. Never had any breakdowns, rarely misfired, IIRC. Currently using the newer Bostitch gun, & it's sweet. Lighweight, nice power & feel, good depth adjustment. Got it on ebay about a year ago for around $200, new. FWIW, Tools of the Trade mag has an article about roofing guns this month. Check it out here... http://www.toolsofthetrade.net/articles/showarticle.asp?articleID=2289&position=1&type=article&partID=1(You really got a cousin named Bubba?) ;)
"You really got a cousin named Bubba?"
Nope - Just didn't wanna use his real name.

Boss,
I have a Bostich RN46B that I like. Use for fiber cement but it can be used for roofing. Light, rugged and nice balance. It has jammed a few times on the last nail though.
$260 at Home Despot.KK
My recent experiences with Senco have been a bit disappointing since my older Sencos (framers, staplers, finish guns, etc.) have been tough and reliable.
But, I've got some newer ones, purchased in the last couple of years....they cost less, but seem to be built more cheaply; much akin to a couple of PC guns I've got.
In fact my PC roofers have been pretty much jam free, but the Senco seems to be pretty sensitive to nail coalation....it'll go fine for a couple of coils and then get into jamming a bunch....makes you want to toss it off the roof!
The used one might be a better deal.
