I have a conventional ranch house, 4 people with 3 inch septic line. On the cold days and nites, zero or below, the top 2 feet will frost up and plug. Which causes gas to come in the house. I cannot figure out where either. I am assuming i have a bad trap but they seem fine. Has anybody else had similar experience? Any suggestions on how to fix?

I have never heard of such a thing. It would take a lot of frozen water vapor to plug a 3" vent. If your vent does, indeed plug up, the resulting pressure in your DWV system could blow gas by the water in traps. Any possibility you have a "sag" or "drop" in a horizontal run of vent that has filled with water and freezes in really cold weather?
*Does seem hard to believe but around here (Chicago) plumbing code requires the vent to be increased one size from about 6 inches below the roof to the terminus to prevent this freeze up.
*Steve; Have checked for sags etc. everything seems fine. The ice crystals will form on the top 2 feet. Happens overnight on the real cold nights. Primarily from the rubber boot to the top. Whats DWV anything like DWI:) Bill; I can see where increasing the size may be the cure, I may try that when it warms up enough. I have thought about waxing or greasing the inside, but that would probably be temporary at best. Thanks Guys
