Hello all,
Well we finally started work on the house I posted the rough opening question about. We were hired to reside over the cedar shakes using foam underlayment over the shakes and then the vinyl. Not really the look I like as the vinyl kicks out at the bottom of the walls following the kickout of the shakes (I tried removing the furring holding the shakes out at the base of the walls but they still won’t lay flat as extra layers of shakes were applied to also form the kick out). i did have to remove the shakes in one area so far to change a door. I installed the door using a bituminous spline attached to the jambs between the jambs and the brickmold. Then the splines were stuck to the sheathing. This brings me to my question. The couple of places I had to remove the shakes, I found NO tar paper. The house is OLD but I figured there would be a layer of something waterproofing. Not just shakes and sheathing. I would love to remove the old shakes but I can’t get the homeowner to go for it (budget ya know…I’m not doin’ it for free.). If I can convince them though, how can I integrate the the new wrap with the old windows and doors I am not removing? If they insist on going over the shakes, I would like to at least cover the exposed sheathing in the areas around the doors I had to take out. Can I abut the door frame with tar paper and extend it out over the shakes a few feet and then foam over the whole thing? Any suggestions are appreciated.
