Working on a renovation of a early 1900’s farmhouse and the old floors are 1×4 T&G yellow pine. With fill-ins and repairs the customer wishes the floors, old and new, to be sanded and refinished.
The “flooring refinish man” was called in by the owner and he issued the following:
“I won’t recommend refinishing this floor because they have been done before and if done again there is a large possibilty that the floor will ‘shatter”.”
This scared the owner and left me without a clue, since I wasn’t present to ask questions. But the owner wants my opinion………….I need more understanding about the term “shatter”…………………Can anyone shed some light on this subject?

Never heard that term, but my guess would be another sanding would produce a situation where there wasn't enough meat left in the 'grooved' part, above the tongue, creating the potential for that thin area of wood to break when walked on.
