sherwin williams paints

nic | Posted in General Discussion on July 29, 2003 06:16am

Hi,

We will be painting our house soon (just resided with HardiPlank siding).  I want to choose a good quality paint.  We have looked around and like Sherwin Williams.  Before I make the final purchase I just want to see what others think of Sherwin Williams paints? (External Latex SuperPaint).

If it matters, we live in Seattle WA, a fairly damp location.

Thanks

I paid my way back through school doing remodeling, and used SW a LOT. Never had a paint failure, either, but any paint job requires good prep work. A good paint will fail like a poor paint if the prep's not done properly.  I personally think very highly of the product.

There was an article in FH within the last 2 years about a guy in Seattle or Portland who repaired and refinished decks. He commented he used SW stain products and had never had a failure.

I used SW Duration paint on the HardiPlank on my house. Because it had been up for a year with only the factory primer as protection, I primed it before painting with SW masonry primer. Two years now and it looks as good as the day I sprayed it. I'm in CT, with every type of weather you can imagine.

hardie lists onthe web site spec sheets the paints they suggest for hardie plank

We spec. SW paints all the time, and we do a lot of projects with James Hardie products. Never had a problem with either one. SW has one of the better color selections too IMHO.

One thing to consider since you live in the wet area of the west, ask for them to add a mildecide to the paint. It really helps.

Super paint is good stuff, and I think you'd be happy with it (it already has mildecide in it), but for a large exterior job, I'm with Andy. Duration is a better pick. Its their top of the line and its good to work with, it holds up well, and it's a little more flexible so doesn't chip or split as easily in places where the seasonal temp changes are dramatic.

Big thumbs up for SW in general over the years.

Repainted this house after an appropriately extensive prep job with SW Duration about six years ago. Looks like it was painted a month ago yet today.

Knowledge is power, but only if applied in a timely fashion.

Ditto thumbs up with Sherwin Williams. Was a big fan of their A-100 latex paint for all around medium duty work. It always worked well. I'm sure their other types ( Duration, etc) also work extremely well.

SW has the best out side paint bar none, and someone in your corner for service. Nuff said.

    Nic,

I have used SW paints with good results. Since you are in Seattle as I. You should take a look at a local Company by the Name of Miller Paints. They are in Ballard and I love their product.
