I’m in the process of building my new home and I noticed the other day that the shingles at a valley are cracked about 5″ or so .It is a weaved valley 8/12 pitch ,Tamko architectural 40 year shingles that are only 2 1/2 years old.The valley involves a cricket,is this a problem of a weaved valley?

It's a little hard to say without seeing it, but FYI, I would not use the weave method for architectural shingles. The amount they would need to bend to deal with that pitch would be likely to cause fracturing.

What time of year was it installed?
Those heavy shingles are most definatly going to crack if they were installed in real cold weather.

The shingles were installed in ( I found the invoice)September 2000 and I'm in Conn. If I remember right the weather was pretty decent.I was under the impression that Tamko was a good shingle.I brought the concern about the 8/12 pitch in the valley to the design people and the cricket problem at least 1/2 dozen times but I was told not to worry about it or was that( four get ta bout #### ?) The cricket is just a problem waiting to happen any way,it has to much roof area flowing too much water toward a house wall.I will try to get a pic up but it will be awhile. Greg
My guess is you're not gonna get anywhere with anyone.
If yer leaking water get the valleys redone without the weaving if possible....Sounds like a one day job to me and few materials.
If no water is leaking get Tamko there anyway to look at the problem.
Aint worth all the aggrivation I'm guessing you're going through.
If it urks you to no end then do all you can do to get a rep to your house to look it over (I would).
Sounds like Tamko is being really shotty,,,I never really liked them so don't go by me.
HEavy shingles like that might just crack but I used Presidential 40 year shingles about 20 years ago that still look fine woven ( I did the roof job) so......
Be persistant

Thank you all.I called Tamko ,they sent me a warranty packet and I got the ball rolling Greg
The Tamko rep came out and states that it is the type of weave that was done in the valley and the cricket that was put in.So now I will try to get some satisfaction with the designer that drew up the house plans.Thank you every one.
it is really not typical for a designer to deail how a valley is installed. Was that really his call or the roofers who did it?.

Probably a combo of him and me,I do remember telling the roofer I wanted a weaved valley.I guess I did not realize some were better than others should he have? From what the Tamco Rep says it was the type of weave, with the design of the cricket.Though the Rep would not give me anything in writing. Not sure what to do at this point as far as the repair
It must be terminology. I know six ways to run a valley and only one is a weave or woven valley. You may be confusing with a lapped valley.
If you had told me that you wamnted architectural shingles woven, I would have told you that I would not do it and would explain why, selling you on the idea of the right way to do it. I assume the reason you would have wanted woven is not wanting to see any valley metal visible. I can effect that in two or three ways with closed valleys. I wasn't part of that conversation so I don't know how this came about. There are shinghle layers who have limited experience and exposure who only know one or two ways of running a valley and who may not have known enough to educate you. I do differentiate between a "roofer" and a shingle layer. It only takes a couple months to get to where you can make a living installing shingles without knowing much about roofing. Maybe that is who you had.
If you insisted on this way of doing it, the problem may now belong to you.
Sorry.

Good point. When I audition shingle subs, I quiz 'em on how they do different types of valley treatments. Kind of like the sawhorse construction audition for carpenters.
I got the advise of that type of valley from a book I wasn't to concerned about visible metal,I just thought that this was the way to go( wish I knew about this forum then LOL) If the roofer had given me any info about a potential problem with that type of valley I sure would have listened.A little communication goes a long way. As for the weave, there is a western weave, calif.weave and I think one or two more. can the roof be saved and the valley replaced?
Sure, but as I remember, this is mostly cosmetic at this point. If it was installed with metal backing it up and ice/water shield behind that, it is likely as not to keep shedding water for a lifetime.
The problem with any weave is that it involves shingles bending through the valley. The steeper the pitch, the harder they must be bent. An 8/12 almost gaurantees that the material will be broken to bend that hard. Architectural shingles are less flexible than single layer types and the thicker ones are even stiffer yet. Besides, a woven valley uses a few more sq ft of shingle and those arch concept ones are more expensive..

No leaks that I can see yet.No metal was used in the valley as far as I know but I wasn't there to watch.Ice and water shield was supposed to have been used in the proper places. does this sound like a big job to fix?And if not what are you doing next weekend Ha Ha
I started to roll my eyes, but hey, for the right money, I can be anyplace, Ha, Ha.

Money,nah you don't want that ! I live near some Great Italian bakeries .Cannolis,italian bread,italian cookies,anisette,cookies.angel wings,tiramisu,biscotti,Am I hitting a soft spot!!
Don't need no soft spot in the tummy when bending over all those shingles.
For some reason my mouth is watering though.
