This is the start of my shop floor. End grain tiles are Jamaican Raintree (no ya can’t smoke it). Jatoba, 1/4 sawn w.o. and walnut finish it out.
The floor can only be built from loose bundles…so I don’t know exactly what I’m gonna do with the rest of the shop.

It is quite evident that you and I use the term "shop" quite differently. My shop is where my table saw, band saw, drill press, workbenches, and tool storage are. My shop floor is two layers of 3/4 ply.
Yours looks infinitely better than mine. Good work!
Thanks,
This has been and will continue to be a working floor shop...with a fitting floor.Ditch
curious if ever build the medallions or other detailed pieces in your shop, then install them as one unit?
Funny you should ask. Up until now all of my details have always been 3/4" site cut and splined. 3/4" is difficult and dangerous when putting small pieces together.
We've been playing in the shop a lot with more intricate borders and details....1/4" glued to 1/2" plywood. Using old school stack and cut production methods.
That's the real reason for the wood floor...the cold concrete was killing our backs.

I thought I was putting together a designer shop?!!!
One thing about this shop floor idea:
The goofball that owned this house prior to me put a fairly decent epoxy paint on the basement floor that is holding up pretty well. I was thinking about some type of concrete relief like you referred to, but the tax assessor shows up one day checking out the status of the building permit I pulled for this partial basment finish - primarily the shop and a poker room.
Since I was taking my time and I hadn't finished yet, he agreed to hold off until the year's end. But he also asked about how much of the basement would be considered finished after I was done. That's cause the property taxes would be based upon that finished percentage.
Well, I said, "that depends on how you define 'finished.'" He said finished means finished floors and ceiling - both together. No finished floor, no finished area.
So's I'm making real good with my painted seament.
That's my kind of shop floor. Man I wish you were my best friend and owed me a lot of favors.
Who Dares Wins.
Gunner,
I already owe plenty of favors. Thanks!Ditch
Ditchmiester,
What can I say other than thats nicer than most living rooms but then again you da man in that dept.
Kinda feels like playing around doing whatever you want doesn't it being that its your own house/shop?
Kinda like my BIL who does carpet installations.
He put together a carpet with a "sea" agenda in mind in his living room. Quite spectacular as is your floor.
By the way.....what wide plank flooring company do you think is the best. 10-15" widths..6-16 ft lengths for my living room(350sq ft).
I'll be ordering almost another 1500 sq ft this summer/fall of Eastern white pine.
Another company called me two weeks after I ordered the planks from Carlyle and I was real impressed with them.....not to mention they were a whole lot less expensive.
I got prices all over the place from almost ten bucks finished with stain and tung oil to 4.50 just sanded smooth.
Carlyle was 5.80 sanded plus about $280 shipping which I think is a bit high.
Anyway.fantastic job as usual that you did......
Be floored
