Hi, we are replacing the windows and siding for our cabin but are getting different opinions on the best way to install the windows. The question is whether the windows should be strapped or attached directly to the sheathing.
The windows (from North Star) are 3.25″ thick (jamb depth), and have a factory-installed nailing fin that positions them so that 1.25″ is on the exterior and 2″ on the interior. They won’t have any brickmold. We are planning on wood channel siding that is 5/8″ thick attached to 1×3 strapping.
If we attach the windows directly to the sheathing, they will stick out 1.25″, which is 1/8″ less than the combined thickness of the strapping / siding. Does this make sense?
We would also like to have wood trim around the windows. Is it best to have this on top of the siding or thicker wood that the siding butts up against?
Any thoughts or suggestions would be very much appreciated! Thank you.

Best option is cut your rough opening wider by 1.5" and install a 3/4" hardwood sill all around. Sawsall is a little rough for me but dremel from rigid R2851 series B has done this very job for me just fine. good lucks
