I’m installing a shower where a toilet was previously located and there is no trap in the floor. The drain is in a concrete slab and there’s radiant floor tubing in the slab so I don’t want to cut concrete to install a p-trap. Somebow, I need to get a trap in there and I just don’t have room for a traditional trap.
Several months ago I read an article in Fine Homebuilding about a “trap” for exactly this situation, but now I can’t find that issue. It looks like an ABS union but it has a “sock” or rubber sleeve that hangs down and prevents sewer gas from coming up. It allows drain water through, but closes up afterward, thus eliminating the need for the traditional p-trap.
What is this thing called and any suggestions on where I can buy one on-line and get it by this weekend?
Thanks!
Jon

What about using a bell trap instead of a P trap?

The one I saw was in JLC. Thhe name on this one is ProSet Trap Guard, the company name is ProSet Systems 800.262.5355 and their web is http://www.trapguard.com
Thanks!
That's exactly what I was looking for.
That's not meant to replace a trap. It's purpose is to prevent the trap seal from evaporating causing sewer gas to escape into the living space.
looks to be a floor drain ...
not a shower drain.
sounds like a hand-dig job thru the concrete.

Why would that matter? Wouldn't you just end up w/ an oversized shower drain?
Regardless, I'd go w/ the bell trap instead like I said before (unless this was a seldom used shower). It would be less $$ & you can pick one up at the local hardware store.
