My home has western cedar shiplap siding installed vertically. On the South and West sides it has warped significantly from the sun and we are looking at replacement options. We don’t want vinyl or aluminum but don’t know whether to look at plywood external siding, new cedar, or some sort of engineered wood & resin siding like SmartLap. Has anyone tried engineered products or do you have recommendations?
Thanks,
Jim Voorhies

In one word, Fibercement. Do a net search on this and I believe you will be convinced that, in toto, it wins.
*jim... fibercement is my 1st choice... Mike Smith "***Cedar lap fiber cement***" 1/17/02 9:14pm
*I used Hardie Shingle fiber cement siding on my new home two years ago. I love it, though it's expensive. There have been many earlier discussions about working with it.
*b smooth versus wood grain hardiplank I am building a house and am using hardiplank..I like the smooth but I notice that the cementboard texture can show and the nails are very obvious. I am wondering what the tricks are to make the siding look better...is it better to brush on paint than spray and would that mke the slight cement texture disappear. can you fill in around the nail holes to make thme more smooth and hide them? Do others have a strong preference fo r the wood grain? thyank you
*we've used HardiPlank on our Habitat homes here in Ventura County for the last two years. Great stuff. We blind nail so no nails show. We predrill in the corners so they don't snap off. Pros probably would not have to do this step, volunteers need the extra help. The material is very volunteer friendly. We use electric shears to cut it.In Peace and Partnership,Martin
*I've used a lot of Hardi-Plank here in New Orleans. blind nailing is the way to go. Just be sure to keep your nails at least an inch from any edge. We've even used it on some of our Habitat houses. And yes we do have to pre-drill it for the volunteers.LOLGlad to see another Habitater in hereDan
*and I thought I knew what blind nailing was:?? nailing the top of the shingle near the top so the bottom of the next shingle that goes on (above) covers the nail?????But what keeps it from lifting off in a hurricane - I live in coastal SC
*nail some samples up and try to pry them up.. i think you'll like blind nailing
