My house has prestained cedar siding installed new in 1985 at the time of construction. The house has not been stained or painted since. I would like to go back with a latex color. The problem is that the entire house was caulked very well with clear silicon. Ahhh! Any thoughts on how to best handle that?

I've had some success sanding it first to give it some tooth, but Lexol will stick to it and can be painted.
LEXEL..much easier to get, than lexol

What are you thoughts on priming first with an exterior oil based primer? The siding is in very good shape overall. Almost no bare spots.
Here is what I think: Your first coat of finish lasted 19 years. Probably 2 reasons for that: 1) it was prestain, and 2) it was stain.
Once you paint the house you are going to have to repaint on a regular basis - is that really what you want? Low maintenance -> High maintenanceMatt
Oooops, Lexol's the leather treatment ... don't think that will help paint stick :|
It may also be time to replace the caulk. Clear silicone usually will peal right off cedar. You may have to scrape a few spots some. If mass quantities were mushed on with a heavy thumb I would try Liquid Sandpaper. Hopefully that's not the case.
good point, no "good after bad" should apply

I haven't been able to find the Lexel yet?
Do you have any experience with the new GE product?

I have not used that , but it DOES say paintable.
My concern is will it stick to silicone that is there.
Lexel is really an adhesive, so I know it sticks. Try here and see if they have a dealer near you. I have a friend send it to me from NC, I can't seem to find it here either. I will be calling him soon or visiting first week of oct. to get some more for me. I can mebbe get ya some too..if you cant get it sooner.

I can't find Lexel in home center stores like Lowes, but I can find in in little hardware stores--I think I've seen it at Ace (which is a chain, but in our town it is a small store)and we have a Do-It or something like that hardware store that's a chain store that has it.
ACE

Do-It-Best
Are not "chains". They are buying groups or co-operatives.
Each store stocks what they want.
If you ever need anything "strange" as to look at their specail order catalogs.
Here at least, the local HD stocks it...
I thought they were "local", then remembered generic ads on TV, so figured they were chains; thanks for setting me straight.
a while back, I posted a question about silicone caulk when I messed up in a bathroom remodel. SHPERE told me about LEXEL and I was able to track it down with a few phone calls. it was every bit as good as he said it was, (and better!). Everything looks great, even though it took a while to let cure. I saw the new GE package, and I can only imagine how much trouble they have had with a product that doesn't accept paint. But this LEXEL will take latex paint after 48-72 hours. You do need to wait up to 30 DAYS!! if you use oil-based products...check out the spec sheet.
I was able to find two sources for it here in North Jersey. Both are local lumber/hardware retailers.
Thanks again to SPHERE. I would have never survived!!
