silicone sealant

billc916 | Posted in General Discussion on July 22, 2006 10:01am

Hi everyone. I am new to this online stuff but have got fine homebuilding for 20 years  and have been in the trades for 25 years. But there is a first time for every thing. My question is this. I have just redone a kitchen with new cabinets and laminated tops with a kohler composite sink which is held to the top with silicone sealant (no clips or other mechanical fasteners). The client now wants a different color of top. Can I SAVE THE SINK?  I was thinking of sawzalling close to the edge of the sink and then trying to cut betwween top and sink with a utility knife. Any body out there have better idea? Thanks for your time….billc916

There are silcon "solvents" out there. I have not used any so I don't know exactly how well they work.

But I know that silicon does swell up and lose it strength with hydrocarbons solvents.

    I have used Goof-Off.

I a case like yours I think that your idea of cutting off the bulk first is a good idea.

Then start at an edge and put on the Goof Off. After a couple of minutes work a putty knife around. Then with the gap a little more.

    And keep repeating.

Dislodge the sink first by ..............after you finished, they want a new top?..................taking a couple of one inch flexible putty knives and work one under the sink.  Flat on the top, work it back and forth and get it under there.  Take a hammer and tap the edge of the blade so it cuts through the sealant sideways.  Do that all the way around the three sides you can get to.  Next or in conjuction with the previous, take a thin flatbar-one of those small glaziers bars from Red Devil (hooked on one end and flat on the other), work that under and gently pry up.  If you have two, while prying up one, work the other in there down a ways.

Now, you might be able to overlaminate a new color to the top because you haven't boogered up the deck that's there.

Now they don't like the color?  Man.

    Best of luck.

A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

My way is just like calvins, but last time I went out to the truck and used the jack to put some "up" pressure under the sink. I used the thin scraper blades to "cut" the silicon and out it came. Took longer to cleanup the top ready for the next sink!!

Similar : I've a couple of old linoleum knives that I've heated, bent the end onto a sideways hook, then re-tempered.  Work great for you type task.  Preheating with a heat gun or hair dryer helps, MEK disintegrates silicone, a little sprinkel along the cut edge (deep cut under the edge) and all will lift clear easily in a few hours.
