I am a project manager for a Habitat for Humanity Affiliate in CT. All of our new construction houses have a covered front porch. 16′ x 5′ -Simple framing methods which include 4×4 posts down to concrete footings and continuous up to carry a 2×8 girder for the roof load. 2×8 ledger at house with 5′ joists out to two 2×8’s which are face bolted to the 4×4’s. Joist hangers etc.
Part of my job is to try to save a buck here and there and also to simplfy anything I can for volunteers.
My question is, wouldn’t one 2×8 or maybe bump it up to one 2×10 be sufficient to carry the load of those 5′ joists. The span between the 4×4’s is under 5′.
Thanks

you would have to fight the architect on that one. If the plans are already approved showing the double, then thats what I would use.
I know about your budget and all, but would you really risk a focal point like a front porch for the sake of 16' of 2X? Apparently you would, but I can't say I agree with your logic. If your archy says it flies then I'm right there with you babe. But 16' of 2x ain't worth sticking my neck out for.
I see even more at stake here than the appearance at a focal point. That is safety. He mentions wanting not only to save bucks, but to simplify things for his volunteer help. HHere is how I read that - they want the ingle rim so they can end nail through and into the joists, instead of toenailing with hangers.Since end nailing is pretty much gauanteed to fail in deck framing, it isn't worth while, no matter how much easier it is.
